For the Luba, beauty is not innate, but rather a reflection of moral perfection created over the course of a lifetime. This rare male sculpture is the work of an artist from the periphery of the Luba Heartland, where male ancestral figures were ritually used, indicating a reciprocal influence with the neighboring Hemba.
A work by the same hand was part of Baron Freddy Rolin‘s collection and is published in the catalog of his Luba-Hemba exhibition of 1979.
